WHSmith Movies Direct

We have added WHSmith to our review pages. WHSmith is a trusted high street brand and its DVD rental service is powered by LOVEFiLM, a leading brand in the online DVD rental market. WHSmith ranks well with others on pricing and titles from which to choose. Where it performs well is in its FREE Trial period of 4 weeks which is available on any of its packages - so you can enjoy 1, 2 or 3 DVD's at a time for free for four weeks.

ScreenSelect and LOVEFiLM Merger Complete

On the 6th April 2006 LOVEFiLM International Ltd and Video Island, the owner of ScreenSelect, announced their intention to merge and create what they claim to be Europe's leading web-based home entertainment subscription service. Given their relative sizes prior to the announcements they may well be right!

Today, the merged companies launched their new online dvd rental website under the brand of LOVEFiLM. ScreenSelect for the moment, has a holding page re-directing customers to the LOVEFiLM website.

What does this mean for the industry. Its too early to tell and its anyones guess. What we are sure of, is that there wont be any prices rises or detoriation in service. With the two companies combined inventories, its bound to mean that they have more copies of DVD titles than anyone else! There are still other competing brands out there such as Blockbuster and Tesco. The price for the moment is unchanged but the free tial period has reduced from three weeks to two weeks.

How to evaluate the most appropriate rental package

With the convenience of the internet, vast DVD title range and low prices, online DVD rental is becoming a popular choice for renting DVD’s. With the ever increasing penetration of the internet and consumer spending over the internet following close behind, it doesn’t take a lot to imagine that Online DVD Rental may well overtake the traditional high street alternative.

The Online DVD Rental website was established earlier this year to provide consumers independent reviews, comparisons and rankings of the major UK providers of online DVD rental services. Comparing the various online DVD rental companies needs to take into account a number of factors, including:

(i) Number of DVD titles offered by the rental company;
(ii) Availability and length of a Free Trial period;
(iii) Any penalties and/or restrictions of the service;
(iv) Website Design and ease of use;
(v) Film classification and ease of finding your favourite DVD titles;
(vi) Range of packages available and pricing; and
(vii) Any hidden extra's

Price is just one of these important factors, and this article seeks to help people understand the various packages available and how to understand which offer best value for money. It is important to stress however, that the cheapest price is not necessarily indicative of the best online service provider.

The price of the rental package doesn’t mean anything in terms of value, unless you consider the price it has cost you to watch each DVD per month. This means you need to know how many DVD’s you can realistically watch in any given month.

So, how many DVD’s can you receive in a month? Well, it depends upon a number of things including (i) how quickly you watch the DVD after receiving it, (ii) how quickly you get it back into the return post, (iii) how quickly the postal service gets it back to the online provider, (iv) how quickly the online provider registers its return and allocates your next selected DVD, and (v) how quickly the postal service delivers it to you.

While you can’t control all of these unknowns our experience has been that if you select the one DVD at a time package, and you watch the DVD and return it the same day, you can receive three DVD’s a week or twelve a month. This means, that if you pay £9.99 per month then the average price for each DVD you watches is just 83 pence – now that’s great value. Not everyone will be able to watch and return so quickly but its still a good price if you watch less DVD’s a month. For example, two DVD’s a week works out at £1.24 per DVD and one DVD a week works out at £2.49.

As a final point, its absolutely essential that you keep a list of 20 plus DVD titles registered with your online provider so that the next DVD can be dispatched to you quickly. We are compiling a list of Must See movies to help you maintain your watch list.

Competition Hots up as Sainsbury Pulls Out

Our readers will have noticed that Online DVD Rental no longer lists Sainsbury Online DVD Rental in its review pages. This is because Sainsbury announced today that it was to pull out of online DVD rental. Sainsbury 'one DVD at a time' package was priced the same as Tesco at £7.97 per month, which now means Tesco stands alone at that price point with no visible competition.

We believe this doesnt mean that online DVD rental isnt a good thing. Online DVD rental continues to grow rapidly and is becomming the service of choice for avid movie fans. Sainsbury have stated that it believes online DVD rental just doesn't fit with their online strategy.

How Online DVD Rental Works

With the convenience of the internet, vast DVD title range and low prices, online DVD rental is becoming a popular choice for renting DVD’s. With the ever increasing penetration of the internet and consumer spending over the internet following close behind, it doesn’t take a lot to imagine that Online DVD Rental may well overtake the traditional high street alternative.

There are a number of big brands in the Online DVD rental market, and this article explains how online DVD rental works. Despite the number of companies providing these services, they all follow a similar four step process:

Sign-up & Select.

First of all, simply select your favourite DVD rental service provider from the ones we have reviewed for you here. After clicking on your favourite, decide on the DVD rental price package that suites you best. You'll then be asked to complete an online registration process and select the DVD titles that you would like to watch at home. Its normally recommended that you maintain a list of titles and prioritise on the order in which you would like to receive them. You'll never be short of titles to watch with between 34,000 and 58,000 to choose from! You wont be tied into a long term contract and you can switch between the various price packages available. You will normally be offered a FREE trial, so you have no risk to find out how it works before you finally make you mind up or spend any money!

Receive DVD's through the Post.

Depending on the DVD rental service provider you choose, you should receive your DVD's with a day or two via first class postage

Watch & Enjoy your DVD.

Once you receive your DVD(s), you can take your time and watch them at a time and day that suits you best. There's normally no penalties or restrictions for how long you keep your DVD at home. Remember though, the longer you keep them, the longer it will be before you get your next one(s).

Post your DVD back & receive the next one(s).

Once you have watched you DVD(s) simply put them in the prepaid envelope provided and pop it in the post. Once your DVD rental service provider receives the DVD(s), they will select the next one(s) from your list and post it to you.

Online DVD Rental provides independent reviews, comparisons and rankings of the major UK providers of online DVD rental services.
